An Aluminum PCB is a metal-based, copper-clad board with excellent heat dissipation properties. Typically, a single panel consists of three layers: the circuit layer (copper foil), the insulation layer, and the metal base layer. used frequently in LED lighting products. There are two sides, with LED pins soldered to the white side and the original color of Aluminum on the other side, which is often covered with thermally conductive condensate following contact with the thermal conductivity component.
Construction of an Aluminum PCB
Line layer
The circuit layer (generally electrolytic copper foil) is etched to form the printed circuit for device assembly and connection. Compared to conventional FR-4, the Aluminum substrate is capable of carrying higher currents with the same thickness and the same line width.
Insulation Layer
The insulation layer is the core technology of Aluminum substrate, mainly for bonding, insulation, and thermal conductivity. The insulation layer of Aluminum substrate is the largest thermal conductivity barrier in the structure of power modules. The better the thermal conductivity of the insulation layer, the better it is for the diffusion of heat generated by the operation of the device, and the better it is for reducing the operating temperature of the device, thus increasing the power load of the module, reducing the volume, extending the life, and increasing the power output.
Metal base
The metal used for the insulating metal substrate depends on the coefficient of thermal expansion, thermal conductivity, strength, hardness, weight, surface condition, and cost of the metal substrate.
In general, an Aluminum sheet is an ideal choice in terms of cost and technical performance. The available Aluminum sheets are 6061, 5052, 1060, etc.
