Thick Copper Circuit Boards Preferred for High Current & Power
Heavy Copper Printed Circuit Boards
What is Heavy Copper Printed Circuit Boards?
In the circuit board industry, the copper thickness of the final PCB surface finish will be 2oz. This board is known as thick copper board. The majority of boards have a copper foil thickness of 35um. This primarily depends on PCB use and signal voltage/current size. Some PCBs with high current requirements will have a copper thickness of 70um or 105um. There will infrequently be 140um, etc.
Due to the increased thickness of the copper circuit board, the board can conduct a larger current, accomplish good heat distribution, and implement complicated switches in confined places. Additional benefits include greater mechanical strength at the connection points, the possibility of producing a reduced product size by integrating many weights on the same circuit layer, and the ability to use exotic materials with maximum capacity and minimal circuit failure risk.

The Features of Heavy Copper Printed Circuit Boards
Reduced PCB size due to reduced wired bus configurations
Easy integration with high-power circuits and control circuits
Enhanced thermal resistance reduction by adding copper plating in the thermal vias
Reduced layer count due to ease of adding multiple copper weights on a single layer
Enhanced mechanical strength of PTH holes and connector areas
Thick copper sheet has features such as high current carrying. reduced thermal strain, and good heat dissipation.
Not limited by processing temperature, blowing oxygen when the melting point is high. and hot melt welding methods such as low temperature brittleness.
Thick copper sheet material is fireproof and is a non-combustible material.
Even in a very corrosive environment. copper sheet can form a strong, non-toxic passivation protection layer.

Fabrication of Heavy Copper Printed Circuit Boards
Techniques for Producing Heavy PCBs
For the fabrication of heavy copper PCBs, manufacturers employ a variety of approaches.
This approach fabricates heavy copper PCBs with a smooth surface utilizing embedded copper. Here, the copper is infused into the prepreg resin. Copper thickness is determined by the thickness of the resin.
For example, the fabricator starts with a 6-mil laminate and a 1-oz copper clad. The copper-clad is then coated with photoresist. A 5-micron laser beam is then utilized to carve the circuit layout from the laminate’s side. Through the laminate, the laser must cut to the copper foil. By controlling the laser, the fabricator can prevent copper foil damage.
The fabricator places the laminate into an electroplating tank. After filling the laser-cut groove in the laminate, the copper plating has a thickness of approximately 6 mil.
The blue bar method entails the insertion of thick copper bars onto circuit boards. This process conserves material and decreases the PCB‘s weight. During the fabrication process, the resin flows into the spaces between the copper traces, so facilitating the creation of a uniform surface.
When it comes to multilayer boards with heavy copper layers, fabricators must pay attention to the amount of copper fill between inner layers. Low amounts of fill and resin can result in a lack of resin.
