Metal Core PCB High Thermal Conductivity
Metal Core PCB
Introduction
Metal Core PCB, also known as MCPCB, Insulated Metal Substrate (IMS) or Thermal PCBS is one of the most widely used PCBs today. These PCBs are used in a variety of industrial electronic devices. You may ask how these PCBs differ from conventional PCBs. What are their advantages over standard CEM3 or FR4 PCBs. Let follow XFDC PCB to know more about metal core PCB
The base materials used in PCBs are metals, not FR4 or CEM3 materials. The most commonly used metals are aluminum, steel alloys and copper. Aluminum is inexpensive and has good heat dissipation and transfer capability. Copper has better heat dissipation and transfer capability than aluminum and stainless steel, but is expensive. Stainless steel is stiffer than copper and aluminum and has a low thermal conductivity. Therefore, the choice of metal cores will depend on the application in which they are used.Solder Resist Film

The Basic Structure of MCPCB

Popular of Metal-Core PCB

Single-layer MPCB
PCB with a single alignment layer on one side.

Double-layer MPCB
PCBs with two alignment layers on the same side.

Double-sided MPCB
PCBs have two alignment layers on each side.

Multi-layer MPCB
These PCBs have more than two layers per board.
Benefits of Metal Core PCB
The following benefits of metal core PCBs make them ideal for different industrial applications.
High thermal conductivity:
Standard PCBs with FR4 and CEM3 have weak interlayer insulation and low thermal conductivity. Without proper heat dissipation, internal temperatures may rise and affect internal components. Metal PCBs made from aluminum have excellent thermal conductivity and help keep internal components safe.
Good dimensional stability:
Compared to FR4 or CEM3 PCBs, metal core PCBs exhibit good dimensional stability. When the aluminum PCB is heated to a temperature of 30 degrees Celsius to 140 ~ 150 degrees Celsius, its size will expand between 2.5-3%.
High thermal expansion:
Coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) is the term used to describe the expansion or contraction of a substance at temperature. Aluminum and copper have a higher CTE than ordinary FR4 with a thermal conductivity of 0.8 to 3.0 W / cK
